Graphic Elements

The use of graphic elements helps align unit communications with the Michigan State University brand. Elements include rule lines, a copy bar, and shields that can be used in print and web communications. Below are examples and suggested uses of graphic elements in design layout, as well as downloads.

The graphic elements presented here are not logos and should not be used as university logos or marks. Please see more comprehensive guidelines and examples for use of graphic elements in section seven (7) of the MSU Brand Standards.

Note: When downloading .eps files with Internet Explorer, the file extension is automatically changed from ".eps" to ".ps". To ensure the integrity of the file, please change the file extension back to ".eps" before saving it to your computer.

Rule lines

When separating a block of copy or adding character to a headline, the Michigan State University brand employs two separate rules: a regular rule line and a Spartan spear. The Spartan spear serves as a graphic element that artfully incorporates classical—and distinctive—Spartan iconography into the brand in an interesting and functional way.

Copy bar

When introducing a new segment of copy, the brand employs a horizontal bar with a chevron. The bar provides the beginning of each story with a sense of focus and clarity. While use of the bar is not mandatory when introducing new blocks of copy, it is highly recommended, especially if you wish to draw the reader’s attention to a specific block of copy.

Shields

These graphic elements are to be used—predominantly in editorial elements of the brand—to provide a greater sense of hierarchy and composition to Michigan State University branding materials.

Miniature shield at the end of copy

A miniature shield should be placed at the end of each block of branding copy as a sign-off, signaling the story’s conclusion.

Shield with notch

A shield with a notch on its lower edge is used to contain copy that details various facts and figures about Michigan State University.

Shield with notch and border

A shield with a notch and border can be used to hold smaller amounts of copy and/or headlines. Type should be set flat within it.

Full shield with type

The full shield (a shield without a notch in it) is used to hold the featured subject of a Michigan State University brand story, whether the subject is a person, an initiative, or a specific place being affected by Michigan State University. For example, the full shield could contain “Tom Izzo” or “FRIB.”
